Labour Market Updates

The UK labour market has shown resilience amid economic challenges.

  • Employment Trends: The number of pay rolled employees increased by 24,000 (0.1%) between September and October 2024, and by 140,000 (0.5%) compared to October 2023.
  • Unemployment Rate: The unemployment rate remained steady at 4.3% in the three months to October 2024.
  • Vacancies: Job vacancies continued to decline, with a reduction of 31,000 to 818,000, indicating a cooling in labour demand.
  • Wage Growth: Average weekly earnings, excluding bonuses, rose by 5.2% year-on-year in the three months to October 2024, surpassing expectations and raising concerns about persistent inflation.

Treasury Specific Trends

The Treasury sector in London continues to adapt to evolving economic conditions.

  • Interest Rates: The Bank of England voted to reduce the base rate from 4.75% to 4.5% on February 6th, aligning with market expectations.
  • Government Debt Issuance: UK government bond yields reached 2024 highs as traders reacted to increased debt sales.
  • Market Outlook: Economists predict that UK GDP growth will accelerate in 2025, with interest rates expected to fall at least four times, despite persistent inflation.

Recruitment Spotlight

The Treasury recruitment landscape in London reflects these economic indicators.

Hiring Trends:

While overall employment has seen modest growth, the decline in job vacancies suggests that employers are becoming more cautious in their hiring strategies.

  • Economic uncertainty, project delays, and year end business needs has caused an increase in demand for temporary treasury recruitment solutions.
  • Employers increasingly turning to temp-perm solutions to maintain operational flexibility and assurances on fit.

Candidate Availability:

The steady unemployment rate and rising wages indicate a competitive market for skilled Treasury professionals.

  • Top shelf candidates remain firm on their day rates.
  • Upward day rate pressure on strategic or senior systems based interim roles due to competition over top candidates.
  • Downward day rate pressure on junior interim roles due to ample supply of candidates.

In-Demand Roles:

Positions requiring expertise in middle office, M&A treasury integrations, and proficiency with treasury management systems remain highly sought after.

  • Middle Office Analyst / Manager – circa £350 / 600 day rate
  • M&A Treasury Integration Analyst / Senior – circa £350 / 800 day rate
  • Treasury Manager Systems Analyst / Manager – circa £550 / £1,000 day rate
